The Magnificent Van der Basses
Huh. Tonight's episode of Gossip Girl was...interesting. So, no big surprise, Bart bit the dust. We didn't even get to see the poor guy, except in a newspaper photo. Lame, that.

Chuck was absolutely, positively heartbreaking. I absolutely loved that the show remembered that Blair, Chuck, and Nate have been friends for a long time, and that those were the two who tried to be there for him. I loved his confrontation with Dan. Serena, naturally, was somewhat annoying, because clearly having her ex-boyfriend at the funeral of her stepfather, who she didn't even like, was more important than trying to ease the pain of the guy's son. *eyeroll* At least she was wearing more clothes this week. And oh, God, how heartbreaking was it when Erik told Chuck he didn't want to lose his brother? *sniffle*

Of course, there was the Chuck/Blair storyline running throughout the episode. Honestly, the only somewhat false note for me came during her confession of love. It just felt...overwrought, and not in a particularly organic way. And the way she wiped away her tears? Very odd.

On the other hand, him showing up in her bedroom, absolutely wrecked, and her embracing him? Perfection. Naturally, they couldn't get a happy ending, but it felt right to me. The two of them are like magnets, but when the poles are flipped the wrong direction, it just doesn't work.

And then there were Chuck and Lily. Christ on a cracker, Lil, you're a selfish bitch. For her to even suggest that if Chuck hadn't called Bart, he wouldn't have been in the accident?! My God, woman, if you hadn't been mooning over Rufus at the effing school dance, none of this would have happened!

Did Chuck's burning the secret mean he decided not to tell?

So, Rufus and Lily have a baby. Way to be original, show. Maybe he/she can make yamulclauses and help the Cohens celebrate Chrismukkah next. Oh, wait, that was that other Josh Schwartz show.

Eleanor and Cyrus getting married was intensely adorable, and I love that Blair is bonding with Cyrus. Wallace Shawn rules. And Dorota was totally in the wedding! Whee!

Finally, I vote that Serena stays in Buenos Aires.

If Serena stays in Bueno Aires, I vote that Lily goes to join her. For real.

I forgot to mention Lily throwing Bart's death back in Chuck's face. Just, wow. That was such a low blow. I get that she was probably tired of having to defend herself, but you just don't DO that. Especially since, if she didn't want to have to defend herself, she shouldn't be giddily planning to hook up with Rufus before her husband's body is even COLD.

And Serena's little tantrum at the funeral? My god, I wanted to slap her. She just kept pushing and pushing. I don't even like Aaron that much, and I felt it was rude towards him. But more importantly, Grandma Cici was right - this is Chuck's FATHER they are burying. If he doesn't want Dan there, Dan goes. It doesn't matter what Serena wants. She can pull her head out of her ass for two seconds and acquiesce to someone else's wishes. Actually - she can't, as was clearly illustrated.

Yeah, the fact that Lily was going to pop off to Cornwall or wherever THE DAY AFTER THE FUNERAL was remarkably lame. I realize that she had already decided to leave Bart before he died, but what the hell? I'm kind of glad that Grandma Cici dropped the bomb on Rufus and he was totally pissed. Lily doesn't deserve to be happy right now.

There is something to be said for common decency. If Rufus and Lily were so sure that their love was strong and going to last, they could have waited. Bottom line.

I totally thought that Chuck wasn't going to tell, but that he would change his mind if he found out that Lily and Rufus were going away together so soon after. I didn't count on Grandma Cici dropping that ball for him.

For serious, how does a forty-year-old mother suggest this to a sixteen-year-old kid who just lost his only real family?

It is quickly becoming evident to me that Serena is very much her mother's daughter. Selfish bitches, the both of them.

I completely agree with you on the Rufus/Lily thing. Why is her killing my love for them?

Seriously, it makes me so sad! I loved them so much last season, and this year they are ever so slowly destroying that love. BOO.

I totally agree with Serena being Lily's daughter. The Waldorf-Roses totally trump the van der Woodsen women!

Is it possible that Chuck is Lily's son?

Given all the angst earlier in the season with respect to Bart's issues with his son because his wife died giving birth, I'm guessing no. But hey, it's a soap, so I suppose anything is possible.

Didn't you think it was odd that Lily thought it was a "great idea" for Serena to go to Buenas Aires for Xmas? Wasn't Lily, that selfish bitch, all "family, family, family" just a few eppies ago -- and poor Erik. With her running off with Rufus, was he just going to be by himself for the holidays. Great idea with him being all lonely and such. Excellent mothering.

Apparently family is only important if it somehow involves hanging out with Rufus (Ex.: Thanksgiving). Seriously, what was poor Erik going to do? Hang out with his possibly philandering pseudo-boyfriend Jonathan? Eesh.

P.S. I still need prompts for this, if you're inclined to request something. :)

Ii was so furious at both Serena and Lily that my usual recap of it was extra long! I was just so mad at the show to, but giving us Lily/Serena/Dan's reaction to the news but not Chuck, WTF? Ed would totally had aced the scene. Major fail! I couldn't believe that Lily was seriously suggesting living Erik alone for Christmas, just after Bart's death, couldn't believe that she dared to say those things to Chuck. She was effing unbelievable!!! YOU. JUST. DON'T. DO. THAT! And Serena's tantrum at the funeral gave me urges to fling her off a roof top! I've always felt that (S2) that she was a shitty friend and THAT just proved it! She's a selfish bitch, taking after her mother. Imo, the VDW women are all trash. Poor Erik, how did he become that wise?

Heh, I've been saying all along that the ILY scene was pretty cringe worthy. I can't make myself like it. On the other hand, the scene in the bedroom was so amazing and a true CB moment. Ed was so amazingly heartbreaking, and Leighton was gorgeous as Blair. But as usual they had to cut the scene short. We should have seen the scene progress into them lying on the bed, Chuck finally falling asleep and finding somewhat peace in Blair's arms. THAT would have been a perfect scene, show! And Chuck tucking Blair in! Did you catch that Blair wasn't tucked in, but was after Chuck left. HE DID IT!

I'm sure CeCe had her motivations, but I'm sure glad she revealed the truth to Rufus. I wouldn't be able to take R/L happiness after Bart's death!
